What Vegetarian Nutrients Are Needed
Aug 19th, 2008 by Jim John
You may be surprised to discover that a vegetarian diet is not necessarily a healthful one. There are, as you know, no meat products in Twinkies! If you elect to follow a vegetarian diet for your health, you just have to put in a little more time and effort to ensure that you get all the necessary nourishment from vegetarian nutrients.
There are people who will learn of your vegetarian diet and tell you that you are not going to get the proper nutrition. They are right, if you dont take the time to add the things that you need to adequately feed your body. You can, however, make sure that you get things like protein and iron in sufficient amounts that the elimination of meat products from your diet will not affect your health. According to current nutritional medicine, protein should make up 20% of our diet. How can a vegetarian get sufficient protein without consuming meat?
The soybean is a multi-purpose powerhouse in the vegetarian world. Soybean is the base ingredient for soymilk, tofu, and tempeh. Every vegetarian diet can benefit from the addition of soybeans and soybean products, and they don’t contain a single animal product. Soy products are also wonderful substitutes for meat products and often taste similar or even identical.
In recent years, huge developments have been made in soy “chicken” and soy “meat” products. In fact, much of the time it isn’t easy to tell the difference between soy chicken and real chicken! Chances are that you can even feed soy chicken to some of your meat-eating friends and they won’t even know the difference. These products are just wonderful for the new vegetarian. Eating products made with imitation meat will lend some familiarity to a new diet, but will still keep the diet meat-free.
A lot of people think you need to eat meat to get an adequate amount of iron in your diet. Iron is a vital nutrient and it can be found in spinach - think Popeye. Unless you are extremely low in iron, you don’t need to supplement your diet with an iron pill. Excess iron can be harmful to your health. Caution should be used when adding any dietary supplement. Your diet should supply you with all the necessary nutrients.
Supplements can be a good way to make sure that you are getting everything you need in your diet. Of course, they are not necessary if your diet is rich in everything that your body requires. A good multi vitamin is a solution if you are lacking in any particular vitamin or mineral. You do not have to go to the vitamin store and purchase one of everything they have for sale. You can get away with taking a daily multivitamin that is formulated for vegetarians and you should be fine.
If you are careful and plan your diet to be healthy and filled with vegetarian nutrients rich foods then you should have no problem getting the daily requirements of your body fulfilled.
