If you have decide for a cosmetic surgery then you have probably two problems. The first one is the surgery itself. Every surgery has risks which could probably even be fatal. The second problem is that you are doing the surgery for aesthetic reasons. So the surgery must also deliver aesthetic results beside the medical ones.
The traditional liposuction uses a needle to literally tear out the fat cells. If you have seen the procedure on TV already then you know already that it looks pretty brutal and it is quite a shock for your body.
There is an option to make this surgery much safer and less invasive. It is called tumescent liposuction and beside the safety it has a couple of other advantages.
The advantages of tumescent liposuction are clear. Much less blood loss, a much faster recovery time and it just requires a local anesthesia instead of a full one. The procedure allows a fat removal with much less tissue damage and is therefore the number one technique in liposuction today.
How does tumescent liposuction work? Basically it is not much different to the traditional method beside the fact that during the surgery a lot of fluid is injected under the skin. If one liter fat is going to be removed than about three liters of fluid are injected. The liquid consists of saline, lidocaine and epinephrine. It shrinks the capillaries and reduces blood loss that way.
Once the fluid has caused quite a swelling the fat is removed by the inserted cannula. Since the fluid has caused the swelling, there is much more room now for the needle to do its work.
After a tumescent liposuction you are quickly back in business. You can go back to work after three or four days already. The pain after the surgery can easily be suppressed with pain killers.
The only disadvantage of tumescent liposuction is that it takes a little longer because of all the fluid that also has to be removed after the surgery is finished. But compared with the advantages it is still the better choice.
There are no special side effects of tumescent beside the ones you experience with any other surgery. These are bruising, swelling, scars, pain or numbness for example. All these effects should go away from alone after a while. There are other complications and your doctor will have a complete list of all possible negative outcomes. However, today liposuction is considered to be very safe.
