Does Alli Work In Reducing Weight?
Aug 13th, 2008 by Ann Huz
Alli has been shown to reduce weight but there is also a downside which will be explained below.
First of all, alli is the OTC (over-the-counter) generic name that is used for orlistat which can also be obtained as a prescription in the form of Xenical. It is a fat blocker and prevents your body from absorbing all or most of the fat contained in the foods you eat. Its claims in aiding weight loss also has FDA backing.
However, do not think that you can eat all of the fatty foods to your hearts desire and then just take alli to instantly negate all the effects as that will not work. It should be taken in conjunction with low-fat meals.
The precise amount of weight dropped off while taking alli varied. In one experiment, between 36% and 55% of dieters decreased their body mass by 5% or greater, but it wasn’t really clear what percentage of that mass was fat. Between 16% and 25% of dieters decreased their body mass by 10% or larger. It was estimated that weight loss could’ve been more had alli been taken along with a diet in which calories were controlled.
When the participants had ceased using alli, they regained an average of almost one third of the weight that they lost while taking alli. Gaining back some weight, however, is normal for many individuals on diets.
One main disadvantage of using alli are the side effects it has on your bowel and digestive system. If the foods you consume has a high fat content, the side effects will be greater as more undigested fat will be expelled from your body resulting in loose stools, flatulence, and also bowel problems.
This is particularly true when first using alli as the body isn’t accustomed to the pill, yet. The manufacturer even gives a warning to users telling them that may need to visit the restroom frequently. They even propose that you put on dark pants and take an additional pair to work. However, the embarrassing effects could be decreased by just consuming low fat meals.
Although alli can increase / boost your total weight loss by as much / high as 50%, note that results will vary for each individual.
There is no such diet pill that magically makes you lose weight with you having to do absolutely no work, but alli pills are proven to be effective. If you are struggling to lose weight, it may be a good idea to see your doctor and find out if alli can aid you with your fat loss goals.
